A SMALL TRIBUTE TO BIG AL STAINER AND NEIL ANDERSON . . .
Alan Stainer - affectionately known to all as "Big Al" - came to Alice Springs with Peter Allford - another well known speedway personality who has also passed away.
Big Al's long association with Arunga Park began in 1978 when he and Pete went halves in a Valiant Charger which Pete drove. Past president and announcer Harry Portlock left town in 1996 and Big Al moved into the announcer's seat and remained in this position for 12 years. He also became Arunga Park's official MC for presentations and other events. Big Al was a straight-shooter who never beat around the bush but at the same time, he had a wonderful sense of humour - a perfect mix for the position he held. In appreciation of his many years of voluntary assistance, Big Al was awarded Life Membership at the end of the 2003-2004 speedway season.
Sadly, Al passed away suddenly on June 30th 2008. He was one of Arunga Park's most loved and respected announcers and will always be remembered for his highly professional approach to all things speedway.
Neil Anderson was passionate about motorsports and his ability to build competition machinery, kept him involved with several local clubs. He was always highly competitive and very professional at whatever he turned his hand to, regardless of whether he was competing or acting in an official capacity. As a young bloke new to town, Neil met his wife-to-be Heather and together they formed a great partnership - both on and off the track.
Here at Arunga Park, Neil’s instinct to never give up and his love of sidecar racing, will always be fondly remembered.
